51s awaiting September call-ups
The 51s have struggled in the standings this season, but the Triple-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers has excelled at developing talent for the parent club.
Las Vegas, which fell to 62-74 after Sunday’s 10-4 loss to the Tucson Sidewinders at Cashman Field, has promoted 14 players to Los Angeles this year, and Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti was here this week trying to decide who call up in September.
“There will be some call-ups out of here, but we’re still in the process of sorting through that,” he said. “There are a lot of players who played in Las Vegas this year who are playing in Los Angeles right now, like James (Loney) and Matt (Kemp).”
Other players who were promoted from Las Vegas to Los Angeles this year are Chin-Hui Tsao, Andy LaRoche, Hong-Chih Kuo, Tony Abreu, Yhency Brazoban, Eric Hull, Marlon Anderson, D.J. Houlton, Eric Stults, Ramon Martinez, Shea Hillenbrand, Delwyn Young and Roberto Hernandez.
Colletti singled out several Las Vegas position players — Young, Abreu, Wilson Valdez, Chin-Lung Hu and John Lindsey — along with several pitchers: Jon Meloan, Houlton, Hull and Stults, who is with the Dodgers.
“Delwyn Young’s had a nice year offensively, and he’s played well in the field. Wilson Valdez has had a nice year. Hu, coming up here halfway through the season and playing both sides of the bag, has been good,” Colletti said. “Abreu was probably the best player down here the first half of the season, which prompted his call up to the big leagues, and John Lindsey’s had a real nice year.
“Pitching-wise, I’m curious to see what someone like Jon Meloan can do. Houlton and Hull have helped us out a few times in the big leagues, and Eric Stults is up there right now and has helped us in the big leagues as well.”
The Dodgers entered Sunday four games behind San Diego in the wild-card race, and Colletti said the team is capable of making the playoffs for the second straight year — if it can stay consistent.
“It’s been a year of inconsistency for us,” he said. “We pitched great the first half of the season, and our offense was up and down. When we came out of the (All-Star) break, we got it together for a little while, but then our pitching started to fray, and our offense started to go the other way as well.
“If we can put together a consistent five weeks, we’ve got a shot to do a lot of good, but it’s up to them.”
• NOTES — Valdez went 0-for-1 as a pinch hitter Sunday but had hit safely in 40 of his previous 46 games to raise his average to .339, which is good for third in the Pacific Coast League in hitting.
Young is fourth in the PCL with a .336 average. Lindsey is batting .338, and Hu is hitting .328, but neither of them has enough at-bats to qualify for a batting title. …
Las Vegas starter Eric Cyr held Tucson (72-62) to one earned run on seven hits in seven innings but took the loss as the 51s provided him with one run of support in his third straight start. …
An announced crowd of 9,629 attended Saturday’s game at Cashman Field, giving the 51s their second straight sellout and pushing their season attendance past 350,000. Las Vegas has attracted more than 300,000 fans in 25 consecutive seasons.
