Wild horse roundup could lead to slaughter
To the editor:
What in the world are officials with the Bureau of Land Management thinking? They want to round up 630 horses in the Jackson Mountain area because of overpopulation. But the middle of June is when the majority of mares have either just had their foals or are getting ready to have their babies. Yet they are going to chase the horses for miles with a helicopter?
It seems that the only person with any sense is Rep. Raul Grijalva, D-Ariz., who opposes this nonsense. BLM officials must have completely lost their minds. What part of this scenario could anyone find acceptable?
Yes, there is an overpopulation of horses. But what makes any intelligent person even remotely think that the answer is to run 600-plus horses to rectify this problem? An attempt to corral them at any time is difficult enough – to try to corral them in mid-June facing high temperatures and many immature ponies is nothing short of a slaughter.
There simply has to be another solution. I hope for the sake of the ponies that the answer is found before the helicopter takes off.

The Review-Journal’s Wednesday editorial on the tax code hits the nail on the head with the statement that tax laws “are generating more federal revenue than ever before – yet Congress still spends 65 percent more than it collects.”
It is clear to any rational person that America’s problems are high unemployment and deficit spending. The real unemployment levels are at an all-time high if you include people who have given up hope of looking for a job. And for the third year in a row, the Obama administration has exceeded $1 trillion in deficit spending.
The government’s credit rating is facing another downgrade, making borrowing even more expensive. The economy is in a death spiral, yet the government continues to spend at record levels. The solution is to stop spending. If you are trying to keep the glass full, fix the hole in the bottom before you continue to pour water.
Increasing taxes on corporations that are reluctant to hire is not going to create jobs. It just drives jobs overseas.

I see the first lady is hitting Las Vegas again this week. It is great to see a member of the Obama family here every other week. If the president would be so kind as to tell some of his wealthy donors what a great city we have here, maybe they, too, will visit us on a constant basis and make a donation to our struggling economy.
