Glass house

Hoping to beef up his bona fides with the far-left, moveon.org crowd, Sen. Russ Feingold, D-Wis., said Sunday he wants to push for resolutions in the Senate to censure the president over the Iraq war and his “assault” on the Constitution.

“This is an opportunity for people to say, let’s at least reflect on the record that something terrible has happened here,” said Sen. Feingold. “This administration has weakened America in a way that is frightful.”

The censures would reprimand George W. Bush for issuing misleading public statements over the need to go to war in Iraq, and for “a continuous assault against the rule of law through such efforts as the warrantless surveillance program against suspected terrorists,” The Associated Press reports.

Trying to show bit of common sense, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid dismissed Sen. Feingold’s proposal, but couldn’t resist labeling Mr. Bush “the worst president we ever had.”

Apparently, Sen. Reid slept through the Carter years.

At any rate, the irony here is that Sen. Feingold co-authored the McCain-Feingold campaign finance bill, which outlaws certain types of speech. The U.S. Supreme Court recently tossed out parts of that law for violating the First Amendment.

An “assault” on the Constitution? Perhaps Sen. Feingold should refrain from throwing stones in his glass house.
