EDITORIAL: Impressive food drives
With so many charitable efforts under way to help Southern Nevada’s neediest residents, there isn’t enough space in this newspaper to properly recognize them all.
But two recently concluded campaigns are especially deserving of the community’s thanks. Here’s a shout-out to valley scouts and MGM Resorts International.
The 25th annual Scouting for Food Drive wrapped up nearly two weeks ago. As reported by the Review-Journal’s Steven Slivka, more than 8,000 Boy Scouts and Scout leaders collected about 220 tons of food for the Salvation Army pantry.
“I think it’s incredible to see our young children caring for others,” Maj. Robert Lloyd, Clark County coordinator for the Salvation Army, told Mr. Slivka. “Las Vegas really is one of the most generous cities there is.”
This week, employees of MGM Resorts International wrapped up their monthlong drive to benefit Three Square Food Bank. According to Feeding America, the effort set a national record for largest company-executed food drive: 922,161 pounds of food, or 461 tons. Wow.
Congratulations and thanks to the Scouts, their leaders and their parents, and to the employees of MGM Resorts International, for helping so many valley residents in need.
