North Las Vegas lawmaker shows off baby at Legislature
CARSON CITY — Nevada Assembly members welcomed a special guest Friday — 19-day-old Xavier Carson Alejandre, the son of Assemblywoman Olivia Diaz.
Eight-pound Xavier cried only briefly when his mother stood on the Assembly floor and showed off her first child.
Diaz, 32, gave the baby his “Carson” middle name in honor of Carson City, his birthplace and home at least until the Legislature adjourns in June.
He was born in Carson-Tahoe Regional Medical Center.
Diaz, D-North Las Vegas, said her son has been a “perfect baby” who spends his time eating and sleeping. Diaz’s mother, Alejandra Diaz, is staying in her townhouse in Carson City to take care of the baby while the assemblywoman is busy with legislative business.
“I probably will bring him here (to the Legislature) as needed, but I’d rather keep him at home,” she said.
While the Legislature does not keep such records, Diaz likely is the first legislator in state history to give birth while in office.
Several legislators, most recently former Assemblywoman Barbara Buckley, have had infant children, but theirs were born when the Legislature was not in session. Buckley often brought her son to the Legislature.
Diaz’s husband, Frank Alejandre, works for El Mundo, a Spanish-language newspaper in Las Vegas.
