Broadway’s ‘Hamilton’ stars, Rosen urge Nevadans to vote
Sen. Jacky Rosen joined several of the artists behind the Broadway hit musical “Hamilton” at a Wednesday online get-out-the-vote event organized by Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden’s campaign.
Rosen, actor Phillipa Soo, director Thomas Kail and music director Alex Lacamoire discussed how they felt themes from the musical, which deals with the founding of the United States, have resonated in their current lives as they push for change in the White House.
“We made a show that is about the struggle for the formation of this right to be heard… and what it means to hear someone else articulate something that you thought only you believed in,” Kail said. “Right now, I think within the Democratic Party, there’s a cohesion and a coherence that I’m feeling that makes me feel proud.”
With Rosen acting as host, each guest shared their plans to vote and their reasons for becoming politically involved in lending their voices to Biden’s campaign.
Soo said the current administration has lacked common decency and has moved far away from having actual conversations on how to accomplish anything. Anyone who holds the environment, racial justice or accountability for government corruption dear to them must make their voice heard at the polls, she added.
Lacamoire said President Donald Trump’s four years in office have fostered divisiveness, and that he’s found Democrats to be more rooted in truth, facts, family and love in this election.
“I really do feel that if you don’t make the choice for Biden/Harris, I don’t think that we’re going to be able to make it through,” he said. “And I know that sounds like hyperbole, but I really do believe we are heading towards something that is not good, and it’s terrifying to think of what could really happen.”
The conversation included several intermissions in which Nevada State Democratic Party staff and ads encouraged viewers to volunteer for phone banks and formulate plans to vote as the state’s early voting period moves into its second week.
