Las Vegas has new council members, judge, city manager today
The mood in Las Vegas City Council chambers was joyful Wednesday morning, as the city completed a leadership transition, with Michele Fiore and Steve Seroka officially taking their seats on the dais.
Mayor Carolyn Goodman administered the oaths of office to Fiore and Seroka, who represent the city’s wards 6 and 2, respectively.
“I’m very excited. Las Vegas is amazing,” Fiore said, adding, with a nod to former Mayor Oscar Goodman, “it’s Vegas, baby, and we’re going to have a good time.”
“I think we’ve got a rocky road going forward if you’re like him,” Mayor Carolyn Goodman quipped about her husband and predecessor in the mayor’s office.
Both Fiore and Seroka said they were honored to take office, a little over a month after they were elected.
Seroka echoed one of his campaign refrains, to return the voice of the people at City Hall, pledging to have integrity and “make decisions for the greater good of the community.”
A crowd packed council chambers to watch Fiore, a former Nevada assemblywoman and Seroka, an Air Force veteran, cement their victories after a pair of testy council contests this spring. Both were surrounded by family as they took their oaths of office.
There were briefly four new faces on the council dais, as two of Fiore’s grandchildren sat in two empty chairs during the meeting.
Councilwoman Lois Tarkanian was appointed to serve as mayor pro tempore, tasked with filling in as mayor in Goodman’s absence.
New Municipal Court Judge Cara Campbell and City Manager Scott Adams also were sworn in on Wednesday.
After 40 years in local government, Adams called taking the reins as city manager “the pinnacle” of his career.
Campbell, who defeated incumbent judge Heidi Almase, will take over the mental health court that started under Almase.
“It’s such an honor and a pleasure to be able to serve the city I was born in, raised in and am now raising my children in,” Campbell said.
