Steven Ross, a former Las Vegas mayor pro tem and city councilman, died this week at the age of 59.

“He was reliable and effective as Mayor Pro Tem and one upon whom I depended and trusted for consistent selflessness and focus on issues. I’m heartbroken and will miss this beautiful man,” Mayor Carolyn Goodman said in a tweet Saturday.

Ross represented Ward 6 for three terms starting in 2005.

Goodman described Ross as a man of great kindness who “etched his name in leadership as he served the City Council for the City of Las Vegas.”

Ross died at his home on Thursday. He is survived by his wife, Kelli Ross, his five children and 15 grandchildren, according to an online obituary.

“Kathy and I are devastated to hear this news,” Gov. Steve Sisolak said in a tweet Saturday. “We’re sending our thoughts and prayers to Steven’s family, friends and loved ones.”

Ross termed out of his council seat in 2017 after serving for 12 years.

He ran for mayor in 2011, when Goodman was elected for her first term. In 2016, Ross challenged Commissioner Marilyn Kirkpatrick but lost in the primary.

Ward 6 is currently represented by Michele Fiore, who defeated Kelly Ross to win the seat in 2017.

Ross’ funeral is scheduled for Sept. 20 at 11 a.m. at Palm Northwest Mortuary, 6701 N. Jones Blvd. There will be a committal service at noon.
