A winter storm created chaos for drivers in Cajon Pass on Interstate 15 in Southern California on Wednesday.

During the late morning and early afternoon hours, the California Department of Transportation said “light hail” and “extreme wind” were slowing travelers on the pass, which is at an elevation of 3,776 feet. At 3 p.m., the agency said no snow had been reported in the area.

At 7:30 p.m., Review-Journal reporter Alexis Egeland drove through the pass and said the weather “was fine” there. She didn’t see any rain, hail or snow. The “roads were completely open,” she said.

The pass, a major route between Southern California and Las Vegas, is about 60 miles east of Los Angeles.

An early winter storm is hitting the West, affecting Thanksgiving travelers in California, Nevada and elsewhere.
