LV police offering gun locks, safety tips to prevent shootings
Most unintentional shootings involving children occur in the late afternoon, on weekends and during the summer when children are more likely to be unsupervised, according to the National Safe Kids Organization.
Also, up to 80 percent of first- and second-grade children know where their parents keep their guns, the organization found.
Las Vegas police have already investigated six incidents this year in which teens or children have died from gunshot wounds: three homicides, two suicides and one accidental shooting.
To try to prevent more of those types of shootings, Las Vegas police will provide gun safety information and free gun locks at 7 p.m. today at various police stations throughout the Las Vegas Valley.
Each police station will have 100 locks to give away.
