Las Vegas casino signs to go dark to mark Earth Hour

Strip casinos plan to dim some of their lights as part of a global effort to raise awareness of environmental issues Saturday night.

Casino companies including MGM Resorts, Caesars Entertainment, Boyd Gaming and the Las Vegas Sands are scheduled to turn off non-essential lights for an hour at 8:30 p.m., according to KLAS-TV Channel 8.

The lights include rooftop marquees.

The effort is part of Earth Hour, and annual tradition launched in 2007 by the World Wildlife Fund.

Earth Hour is expected to start in New Zealand and sweep through each time zone for 24 hours.

Organizers say landmarks including the Sydney Opera House, St. Peter’s Basilica and the Eiffel Tower are scheduled to participate.
