Gunman sought in fatal shooting

Las Vegas police were searching for a gunman who opened fire on three men Thursday night, killing one and critically injuring another.

The men were shot about 11:20 p.m. at the Pecos Terrace apartments, 3555 E. Lake Mead Blvd., near Pecos Road. The three men were talking and drinking as they sat in the bed of a pickup, police said.

The gunman walked up, pulled out his gun and demanded money and wallets from the men. When the men said they had none, the gunman started shooting, police said.

Two of the men were hit. Dario Ortega, 32, of Las Vegas, died at the scene. The second was taken to University Medical Center. The third escaped without injury.

Victim in water-skiing death identified

A 25-year-old Henderson man killed in a water-skiing accident Thursday evening on Lake Mead was identified as Karl Harding by the Clark County coroner’s office.

Harding was skiing at high speed in the Boulder Basin area of the lake when he hit the water and was injured, said Roxanne Dey, spokeswoman for Lake Mead National Recreation Area.

No other vessel was involved in the incident, and the area where he was skiing is a deep part of the lake, Dey said.

A park ranger performed CPR for about 30 minutes before Harding was pronounced dead, she said.

19-year-old man dies in Henderson crash

A 19-year-old man was killed in a two-vehicle wreck at the intersection of Lake Mead Parkway and Boulder Highway late Thursday, Henderson police said.

The wreck occurred about 10:35 p.m. when a Dodge van heading west on Lake Mead ran a red light and hit a Chevrolet Impala traveling north on Boulder Highway, police said.

The 19-year-old driver of the van was not wearing a seat belt and was partially ejected from the vehicle as it rolled over, police said.

The van’s two passengers, a 19-year-old woman and an 18-year-old man were wearing seat belts and were not injured.

The 20-year-old driver of the Impala, Victor Armendariz, was not wearing a seat belt and was taken to St. Rose Dominican Hospital, Siena Campus, for treatment of his injuries.

The identity of the man who died was withheld by police.
