Home invasion results in slaying of 19-year-old man

A man was fatally shot during a home invasion Wednesday morning near Silverado Ranch Boulevard and Spencer Street, police said.

Las Vegas police were called to the house on the 1800 block of Pyle Avenue at about 4 a.m. and found the man dead from a gunshot wound.

Police said two or three men broke into the home and shot the man.

A friend of the victim, 19-year-old Gus Andrade, identified the deceased as 19-year-old David Cardenas.

Cardenas, who attended Liberty High School, lived at the house with his mother, Andrade said.

He drove to the house on Pyle on Wednesday afternoon after he heard that his friend had been killed.

“I don’t know who could have come here and shot him,” he said.

Police did not have a specific motive for the slaying.

Several neighbors on Pyle said the victim had often hosted loud parties at his house when his mother was away.

One neighbor, who declined to be identified, said there were often people coming over at the house at odd hours of the night. They would stay for about 10 minutes and then leave, the neighbor said.

“I doubt they were just exchanging video games,” the neighbor said.

But Andrade said he wasn’t aware of any criminal activity or problems at the house.

Anyone with information about the incident is urged to call Crime Stoppers at 385-5555 or the Las Vegas police’s homicide unit at 828-3700.
