Summerlin-area summer camps cover bases from learning to athletic skills

Christal Clow has used summer camps for her nine children even though she was an at-home mother.

“They needed something to do during the summer, too, a way to spend their time,” she said. “… I had a son who was into art, so I was able to find one for art. You can find ones for your child’s own specific interest, so it kind of gave them some quality time doing something they enjoyed.”

Summer activities are geared toward various age groups, and camps fill up quickly.

Melinda Gutierrez has six children ages 5 to 16 and signs the older ones up for camps.

“I mostly use athletic summer camps for my kids, like the UNLV summer camps, because they all participate in sports,” Gutierrez said. “We’ve done basketball and volleyball. … It’s important that it be pretty focused. I’m not looking for a place to entertain them; I don’t need something else for them to do. I’m looking for those skills to be taught.”

VETERANS MEMORIAL LEISURE SERVICES CENTER

The Veterans Memorial Leisure Services Center, 101 N. Pavilion Center Drive, offers activities for children of all ages, including exercise and fitness with its full-size pool and nearby sports fields. It also offers age-appropriate activities, including field trips, sports, special events, arts and crafts, nutrition, physical fitness and games, under the supervision of trained staff members.

Camps are scheduled from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, June 9 through Aug. 15. Themes include Spirit Factory, Singing In The Shower, Garage Band, Shake It Up, Recycled Art, and Say Yes to the Mess. Facts and Fun includes Dig Those Dinosaurs, Bricks 4 Kidz, Defying Gravity, For the Love of Books, Comic Creation, and K-Nex-K-Bot specialty camps for ages 7 to 16, where children use rods, connectors, wheels, pulleys and gears for robotic creations (no field trips).

DURANGO HILLS COMMUNITY CENTER YMCA

Worried your child will lose every bit of knowledge over the summer months? The city of Las Vegas’ Durango Hills Community Center, operated by the YMCA at 3521 N. Durango Drive, is premiering the Six Elements of Camp.

The focused attention on the elements is an intentional effort to impact the “summer learning loss” experienced by many students. Weekly camps have themes such as What a Wonderful World, Time Travelers, Race Around the World, and Fun To Be Fit.

Y Summer Day Camp are scheduled from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, June 9 through Aug. 22 (camps are closed on the Fourth of July).

Costs start at $121 per week. A $25 deposit per week holds your camper’s spot. Registration is limited and offered first come, first served.

SHENKER ACADEMY

Another alternative is the summer camp at Shenker Academy, 9001 Hillpointe Road, planned from June 16 through Aug. 15.

The preschool and kindergarten campus is offering half- and full-day summer camps for children 1 to 5 years old, with age-specific concentrations. Half-day programs are set from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and full-day from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The camps last two weeks for 3- to 5-year-olds with the possibility of weekly or daily attendance. For younger children, the camps incorporate weekly themes with the possibility of two to five half-day or two to five full-day camps.

Special activities include yoga and Krav Maga, and themed weeks such as Hawaiian Hullabaloo, Dirty Art Projects, Fun with Disney characters, Fashion, or Mad Science Mayhem.

The cost depends on age and frequency of attendance, but a 10 percent discount will apply to families with multiple children or Temple Sinai members. Shenker Academy also will offer a 10 percent discount to parents working as police officers, firefighters or who are in the military. Families have the option of paying weekly or bi-weekly, and daily rates are available.

Before care is from 7 to 9 a.m. for $15 per session and after care from 4 to 6 p.m. for $15 per session.

ATHLETIC CAMPS AND PROGRAMS

Sports-themed summer camps are available at various locations across the Summerlin area.

A golf, swim and tennis camp is scheduled at Canyon Gate Country Club, 2001 Canyon Gate Drive, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, June 14 through Aug. 20.

The weekly cost is $300 for members and $325 for nonmembers or a day rate of $115.

The Darling Tennis Center, 7901 W. Washington Ave., plans to offer a camp from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, June 7 through Aug. 13.

The Red Rock Country Club Sports Camp is set from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, June 9 through Aug. 8, at Red Rock Country Club, 2250 Red Springs Drive.

The cost is $300 for members and $350 for guests ($175 for members and $200 for guests from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.).

The Summerlin Tennis Club, 610 Sageberry Drive, plans to host beginner, intermediate and advanced summer camps from 8 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday through the summer.

The weekly rate is $160 and includes pizza on Fridays. The daily rate is $40.

Tim Blenkiron’s Meadows School Tennis Camp for children 3 to 18 is set for 8 a.m. to noon June 9 through Aug. 22.

Life Time Athletic Summerlin, 10721 W. Charleston Blvd., plans to offer Super-Powered Summer camps for children 5 to 12 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily, June 9 through Aug. 22.

Each week will feature a different theme, such as Mission: Possible, Superpower Showdown, and Festival of Fun, which correlates with the activities and field trips planned for the week.

The cost is $200 per week, per child. Early drops-offs and lunches can be arranged for a fee.

Children’s Learning Adventure Summerlin, 10405 Griffith Peak Drive, plans to offer summer camps for children 6 to 12.

The Our Learning Adventure Passport-themed summer camp will take children on adventures as they “explore the globe,” experiencing traditions, cultural games and foods. Theatrical interests can be explored through Picture Paradise, while would-be scientists can enjoy Laboratory Lagoon. Art Studio will offer artist techniques and artwork creation. A weekly thematic-based celebration is planned incorporating the learning, adventures and fun of each travel destination.

The Lone Mountain Creative Learning Center, 6863 W. Lone Mountain Road, offers child care year-round, so its summer camp is normally utilized by families already using the facility. Located across from Santa Fe Station, it offers a secured facility with programs such as Grow Your Own Garden and a nutritional food program.

OVERNIGHT CAMPS

Camp Erin

Nathan Adelson Hospice is partnering with The Moyer Foundation to launch Camp Erin Las Vegas, a free, overnight weekend camp for children 6 to 17 who have experienced the death of a loved one.

The environment of camp is combined with planned activities that give children a chance to honor their loved ones, express feelings and make friends. The camp is led by grief professionals and trained volunteers.

4-H STEM Camp

The University of Nevada Cooperative Extension Southern Area’s 4-H camp is planned at the Nevada State 4-H Camp at Stateline from July 27 through Aug. 1.

The camp will utilize the 4-H Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) program. For six days, campers will participate in activities focused on nature, healthy lifestyles, alternative energy, Global Positioning Systems, rocketry, dramatic arts, leadership and creative arts.

Registration is open to children 9 to 15 until the camp is full, and 4-H membership is not required.

Camp Lee Canyon

Clark County Parks & Recreation plans to host two Summer Sleep-Over camps at Camp Lee Canyon on Mount Charleston from June 15-27. Each weeklong camp begins on a Sunday afternoon and ends on a Friday night.

Omni Discovery Camp is for children 8 to 12, and On the Edge Adventure Camp is for youths 13 to 15. Activities planned include hiking, cabin skits, campfires, and specialty classes and activities.

The cost is $400, which includes all meals, snacks, activities, supplies and a T-shirt. Parents or guardians must transport campers to and from camp.

Camp Foxtail

The Girl Scouts of Southern Nevada offers Camp Foxtail in the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest for registered Girl Scouts 8 to 17. Sessions run from June through August and offer an educational experience including singing, hiking, arts and crafts and campfires.
