Sandoval pledges to copy Florida, fix schools

Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval says he wants to copy Florida’s efforts to overhaul its failing public schools by promoting charter schools and ending social promotion.

Sandoval said Wednesday that Nevada needs to do more to keep underachieving students from being promoted to the next grade level. He also said that Nevada parents need more choices, including charter schools.

Sandoval made his remarks with former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush standing by his side at Agassi Prep.

Sandoval recently formed a statewide agency dedicated to charter schools. He also signed into a law a measure that makes it easier to fire underperforming teachers.

Conservatives tout Bush as a leader in education reform.

Some rankings place Nevada schools among the worst in the country.
