National Merit semifinalist: Kevin Cong | Green Valley High School
■ What college do you plan on attending and for what major?
I am still in the process of applying, but some schools I’m looking at are Harvard, Yale and Columbia universities, the University of Chicago or the University of Southern California. I intend to major in either international studies/relations, political science, or economics. I’ve been interested in these fields since participating in speech and debate since these are some of the topics we discuss.
■ What extracurricular activities do you participate in?
I participate in forensics, varsity quiz, International Awareness Club, Science Bowl, Young Democrats and volunteer for the charity Project Hope.
■ What do you do for fun?
I play some sports, such as basketball, watch TV, hang out with friends, travel, participate in snow sports during winter, such as snowboarding. All “normal” things that a teenager would do.
■ In detail, how did you prepare for the PSAT?
I studied some vocabulary and took practice tests, not specifically for the PSAT, but for the actual SAT. The questions are about the same/somewhat harder, so SAT practices tests prepared me well for the PSAT.
■ Why are grades so important to you?
I’ve always strived to succeed and conquer challenges. I’ve seen grades and school as just another challenge to be conquered. And I’ve always liked the feeling of success — that warm, fuzzy feeling you get.
■ What’s your favorite movie and book?
Favorite movie is “Fight Club” (I know the first rule). My favorite book is “Atlas Shrugged” by Ayn Rand.
■ What’s a guilty pleasure of yours — such as a TV show, movie or hobby — and why are you ashamed of liking it?
I read a lot of “literary trash,” as coined by English teachers. I’m “ashamed” because they are so horrible in an academic sense.
