National Merit semifinalist: Garrett Gosse | The Meadows School
■ What college do you plan on attending and for what major?
I have not decided on a specific college, but I will be applying to Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Harvard University, Harvey Mudd College (one of the premier math, science and engineering colleges in the nation), and Princeton, among others. I will pursue a degree in the engineering field, as math and science have always been my favorite subjects.
■ What extracurricular activities do you participate in?
Athletically, I play basketball, baseball, football and wake-surf. I am involved with student council, Spanish Club, National Spanish Honor Society, Key Club, National Honor Society, and Student Ambassadors.
■ What do you do for fun?
I enjoy spending time with my friends, playing sports, and beating my little brother in "Madden NFL 2012" on Wii.
■ In detail, how did you prepare for the PSAT?
I did not have any specific studying for the PSAT. The work I had done for my classes was sufficient for the test.
■ Why are grades so important to you?
Grades themselves are not as important as the understanding of the material and the work ethic of which the grades are representative.
■ What’s your favorite movie and book?
My favorite movie is "Remember the Titans," and my favorite books are "1984" and The Inheritance Cycle, a series of fantasy novels by Christopher Paolini.
■ What’s a guilty pleasure of yours — such as a TV show, movie or hobby — and why are you ashamed of liking it?
My guilty pleasures are watching "The Office" and playing in multiple fantasy football leagues. I waste too much time, especially when my hard work results in nothing but two straight unsuccessful seasons.
