Thunder claps above Strip late Monday; more storms coming Tuesday
Lightning flashed and thunder clapped above the Strip and downtown Las Vegas late Monday as monsoon weather brought another round of storms to the region.
Though the evening display lit up the sky and could be heard for miles, the weather station at McCarran International Airport had not received measurable rainfall as of about 10:30 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.
Still, areas of the valley saw drizzling rain and brief downpours Monday evening.
In northeastern Clark County — including Moapa and Overton — a severe thunderstorm warning was issued at about 9:50 p.m. Damaging winds and large hail were possible, according to the National Weather Service.
Another round of storms are expected Tuesday evening with “even more activity possible,” meteorologist Todd Lericos said.
Precautions
Though more rain is likely, the Las Vegas area will still see triple-digits Tuesday. A high of 109 degrees is expected with a morning low of 90 forecast.
The Southern Nevada Chapter of the American Red Cross has shared the following reminders during times of excessive heat:
Never leave children or pets alone in enclosed vehicles.
Use a buddy system when working in excessive heat, and take frequent breaks if you must work outdoors.
Check on family, friends and neighbors who do not have air conditioning, spend much of their time alone or are more likely to be affected by the heat.
Check on animals frequently to ensure that they are not suffering from the heat.
