Rain, hail hits parts of Las Vegas Valley
Isolated thunderstorms Thursday brought cool weather, hail and rain to parts of the valley, the National Weather Service said.
Hail up to a quarter of an inch in size hit the northwest valley between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m., meteorologist Chris Outler said.
Icy precipitation was reported near Ann Road and U.S. Highway 95, and also near the intersection of Jones Boulevard and Iron Mountain Road, Outler said.
Highs on Thursday reached only 75 degrees, Outler said, 13 degrees cooler than the May 14 average of 88 degrees. Wind speeds reached 15 to 20 mph, and gusts reached as high as 30 mph.
“It’s definitely unusual for this time of the year,” Outler said.
Temperatures will drop again on Friday to about 65 degrees, according to Outler, and scattered precipitation may hit the valley for the second straight day. Outler predicted a 40 percent chance of rain.
“We’re kind of in a cool weather pattern right now,” he said. “It’s more typical of a winter or spring system overhead.”
Outler predicted temperatures in the mid-70s for Saturday before a sunny Sunday brings back highs in the 80s.
