Las Vegas Monorail strikes deal with company staging Rock in Rio festival
The Las Vegas Monorail Co. is partnering with the company that is bringing the two-weekend Rock in Rio music festival to Las Vegas in May.
Rock in Rio and Las Vegas Monorail announced the partnership on Thursday. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Under the agreement, the monorail company will offer discounted multiple-day passes to people attending the festival. One of the monorail trains now sports a promotional Rock in Rio wrap.
Ingrid Reisman, vice president and chief marketing officer for the Las Vegas Monorail, said discounted monorail tickets would be available at about 20 percent off through at least the end of March.
Tickets can be purchased on the Rock in Rio website, through Ticketmaster or at the monorail ticket offices at the seven stations. The City of Rock venue at Las Vegas Boulevard and Sahara Avenue is under construction across the street from the SLS Las Vegas, which has a monorail station that is the northernmost point on the system’s line.
Monorail officials believe 15 percent to 20 percent of festival attendees will use the monorail on festival dates May 8-9 and May 15-16.
The monorail system will have extended hours on festival days, operating daily starting at 7 a.m. until at least 3 a.m. Gates for the City of Rock will open at 3 p.m. and close at 1:30 a.m.
In addition to performance stages, the City of Rock site will have a Ferris wheel, a 640-foot-high zip line, a VIP area that can accommodate up to 4,000 people and three Rock Streets highlighting the musical cultures of the United States, the United Kingdom and Brazil.
The festival grounds capacity is estimated at 80,000 a day and so far the festival is on track to sell 50,000 tickets a day.
Taylor Swift, Bruno Mars, Sam Smith, Metallica, Linkin Park, Ed Sheeran, No Doubt, John Legend and Maná are among the performers scheduled to appear.
