Historic ‘Big Boy’ locomotive makes Las Vegas stop
A crew inspected Big Boy No. 4014 on Tuesday, moments after the historic steam locomotive arrived at Union Pacific Railroad in Las Vegas.
The 132-foot, 1.2 million-pound locomotive, which Union Pacific acquired in 1941, is on display near downtown until 4 p.m. Wednesday before it resumes its journey at 7 a.m. Thursday. The locomotive is at 1001 Iron Horse Court, near Charleston Boulevard and Interstate 15.
It arrived in the valley from Pomona, Calif., and is en route to Cheyenne, Wyo., for restoration, expected to take up to five years.
The locomotive was retired in 1961 after more than a million miles traveled around the West.
Of the 25 Big Boys originally built, eight were donated for public display around the country.
