Burst water line ties up traffic at Decatur and Washington

A burst water line caused heavy traffic Tuesday morning at a busy Las Vegas intersection.

A contractor doing utility work bored into an abandoned water line about 5 a.m. at the intersection of North Decatur Boulevard and West Washington Avenue, according to the Las Vegas Valley Water District. Traffic was reduced from three lanes to two on southbound Decatur between Washington and Vegas Drive, and was cut to a single lane at one point.

It is unclear why the out-of-use pipe still had water in it, said water district spokesman Corey Enus, but no customers were out of service.

Lanes were still closed work to repair the pipe and backfill the hole began about 9:30 a.m., Enus said. Construction at the intersection is expected to be finished in the early afternoon.
