Traffic is largely absent at East Fremont Street and East Charleston Boulevard on Friday, Oct. ...

A pedestrian has been taken to University Medical Center with life-threatening injuries after being hit by a vehicle near East Fremont Street and East Charleston Boulevard Friday afternoon, police said.

The Metropolitan Police Department said in an email that the collision occurred about 2:30 p.m.

According to evidence at the scene and video, a police news release said a 2020 Ram Promaster Van, driven by Jose Ramos-Chavez, was turning left from a private drive to go southbound on Fremont Street on a flashing yellow arrow signal at the same time a man was crossing Fremont Street eastbound in a marked crosswalk.

The Ram failed to yield the right of way to the pedestrian, and the front of the Ram struck the pedestrian.

Ramos-Chavez, 54, remained at the scene and was detained and booked on DUI and right-of-way charges.

The pedestrian, an unidentified 60-year-old Las Vegas man, was in critical condition late Friday at UMC, police said.
