North Las Vegas Fire Department gets grant to buy smoke alarms

The North Las Vegas Fire Department was awarded a $46,667 federal grant to buy smoke alarms that will be distributed primarily to low-income families and senior citizens.

The North Las Vegas City Council on Wednesday formally accepted the funds provided by the Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency. In turn, the city will provide $2,333 in matching funds.

North Las Vegas residents who want a free smoke detector should call their local fire station, city officials said.

Separately, the city received a $125,000 grant from Clark County to buy a new trailer, furniture and equipment at the Silver Mesa Recreation Center, where the senior citizen program has expanded beyond capacity.
