Prairie schooner covered wagons, lead in this frame by an entree from the Last Frontier hotel-casino, passes spectators along Fremont Street in Las Vegas, during the Helldorado Days Old Timers Parade, circa 1944-45. HISTORICAL NOTE: The forward most wagon on the left may actually be a Conestoga wagon, a large, heavy wagon build from the mid-18th century until about 1840 for use east of the Mississippi to haul freight prior to the advent and implementation of rail roads. There will be plenty of horsepower for a downtown parade scheduled on city streets Saturday morning.
Fourth will be closed Saturday from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., for the parade that’s scheduled to start at 10 a.m.
In addition to Fourth, Coolidge, Hoover and Gass avenues between Casino Center Boulevard and Fourth, Third Avenue between Charleston Boulevard and Garces Avenue and Fourth between Third and Charleston will be closed as parade staging areas.
The disbanding area will be at the old Regional Transportation Commission bus terminal off Stewart.
Helldorado, established in 1934 and called the longest-running civic event in the city’s history, had a brief hiatus in the 1990s, but was rejuvenated in 2005 for the city’s 100th anniversary celebration.
The event runs through Sunday and includes a rodeo to be staged Sunday at a rodeo grounds facility on the northeast corner of Symphony Park Avenue and Grand Central Parkway.
The Helldorado Days website said the carnival, a regular component of the special event, has been canceled this year due to “unforeseen logistics.”
