Snowy Mount Charleston sees string of crashes
An hour after the Nevada Department of Transportation lifted a snow-chain restriction on state Route 156, the Nevada Highway Patrol responded to two crashes in Lee Canyon Monday afternoon.
The restriction required drivers to use chains or snow tires while traveling on Route 156 Monday afternoon because of “slick, snowy and icy” conditions, said NDOT spokesman Tony Illia. The restriction was lifted about 1:30 p.m.
Less than 15 minutes later, a white Nissan Altima slid down an embankment and rolled over near the intersection of state routes 156 and 158 at 1:43 p.m., according to NHP Trooper Chelsea Stuenkel.
Then, at 2:24 p.m., another vehicle slid down an embankment on state Route 156 near mile marker three, Stuenkel said, but when first responders arrived the vehicle was unoccupied.
In between those two calls, a vehicle crashed into a sign in front of the Mt. Charleston Lodge on state Route 157 in Kyle Canyon at 2:10 p.m.
No injuries were reported in any of the accidents, but Stuenkel said police are still trying to sort out what happened in the second Lee Canyon crash.
Snowy weather also prompted a closure Sunday evening on state Route 158, which connects the roads through Lee Canyon and Kyle Canyon. The Nevada Highway Patrol said snowplows were sent out to help the situation.
The Las Vegas Ski & Snowboard Resort reported about 7½ inches of snow overnight Sunday.
