NLV police identify man killed, woman arrested in officer-involved shooting
The man a North Las Vegas police officer shot and a woman arrested on drug charges linked to that shooting were identified Monday.
The Clark County coroner’s office identified the man as Salvador Figueroa, 29, of Las Vegas. He died from multiple gunshot wounds.
North Las Vegas police said he had pulled a gun on one of their officers.
It started about 8:25 p.m. Sunday when two officers were conducting an investigation on Figueroa, and a woman and their two vehicles, police said.
Police identified the woman Monday as Karina Carlota Zaragoza-Maldanado, 27, of North Las Vegas.
Officers were conducting the investigating in the parking lot of the Circle K store at Eastern and Searles avenues, near Owens Street, police said Monday.
Figueroa ran away from the store and across Searles, police said, and an officer chased him into a nearby parking lot.
The other officer stayed with Zaragoza-Maldanado, police said.
But then, North Las Vegas police said, Figueroa ran back to his vehicle. The officer tailed him.
Once there, police said, Figueroa opened driver-side door of his vehicle.
The officer used a Taser on Figueroa, police said. But Figueroa then pulled a handgun, and the officer shot him multiple times.
That happened at 8:49 p.m., according to a news release from North Las Vegas police.
Zaragoza-Maldanado and the two officers were not injured during the incident. Medical personnel pronounced Figueroa dead at the scene.
North Las Vegas police spokeswoman Sgt. Chrissie Coon said a gun was found near Figueroa’s body.
The police officer who killed Figueroa is 41 and a seven-year veteran of the North Las Vegas police department. He has been placed on routine paid administrative leave and will be identified after 48 hours, per department policy.
Zaragoza-Maldanado was booked on a felony charge for possession of methamphetamine and a misdemeanor charge for possession of narcotic paraphernalia, police said Monday.
This is the first officer-involved shooting in North Las Vegas this year.
