Nevada nabs $29.3 million in road grants
WASHINGTON — Nevada has been awarded $29.3 million in federal grants for road improvements in its two major cities, according to state lawmakers.
The Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada will receive $13.3 million for upgrades along Flamingo Road in Las Vegas, including bike lanes and sidewalks, and paving along a 14-mile stretch of the roadway.
“Flamingo Road is one of the busiest roadways in the valley, carrying as many as 90,000 vehicles each day,” said commission general manager Tina Quigley. She said improvements will include more than 85 new bus shelters.
Another $16 million is being given to Washoe County to develop a bus rapid transit service connecting Reno and Sparks.
The money comes from a Department of Transportation program that singled out projects deemed to have a significant impact on a city or a region.
