Man dies, eight others hurt in rollover crash at Lake Mead

Speed and alcohol appeared to be factors in a roll-over crash in the Lake Mead National Recreation Area that left one man dead and eight others hospitalized Thursday, a park service official said.

The identity of the man who was killed, the driver, was not released. He was ejected from the vehicle.

Of the passengers, two were airlifted to a hospital while six others were transported by ambulance. Their conditions were unknown Thursday night.

National Park Service spokesman Andrew Munoz said the incident occurred about 6:15 p.m. A sport-utility vehicle was speeding around a curve. The driver lost control, and the vehicle went onto the shoulder of the road and then down an embankment, where the vehicle rolled.

Munoz said the crash occurred on Northshore Road, near mile marker 43 between Echo Bay and Overton.

Munoz said six of the surviving passengers were under the age of 16, including two infants.

Munoz said open alcohol containers were found in the vehicle. He said the travelers were from North Las Vegas.

The Nevada Highway Patrol is investigating, Munoz said.
