Man critically hurt trying to ‘car surf,’ police say
A 20-year-old man was hospitalized in critical condition Monday night after falling off the hood of a moving sport utility vehicle while attempting to “car surf,” North Las Vegas police said.
The identity of the injured man was not released by police. He was being treated at the University Medical Center.
Police spokeswoman Chrissie Coon said the incident occurred about 9 p.m. on the 400 block of Violetta Avenue, near Commerce Street and Azure Avenue.
Coon said the man fell off the vehicle and sustained significant head injuries. A teenage driver and teenage passenger, ages 17 and 15, were inside the vehicle at the time the man fell off it.
Coon said the man was on the hood of a 1988 Ford Bronco that was traveling about 10 to 15 mph before he fell off.
Coon said it’s not the first incident of car surfing she can remember. She chalked up the incident to teenage antics, noting that students in the Clark County School District are on spring break.
“Kids are looking for something to do,” Coon said. “They obviously thought this was a good idea.”
