Kyle Canyon to lose electricity as strong winds move in

Updated October 21, 2022 - 5:16 pm

Nearly 500 customers will be without power part of the weekend in Kyle Canyon as NV Energy conducts an planned outage because of high winds forecast for the region.

A Public Safety Outage Management (PSOM) will affect about 470 customers when power is turned off in the Kyle Canyon and Angel Peak zones on Saturday starting between 7 and 11 a.m. and lasting until Sunday at 10 a.m.

The outage is designed to prevent electricity from transmission lines from starting fires.

NV Energy will provide a Customer Resource Center at The Retreat at Charleston Peak, 2755 Kyle Canyon Road. It will be available from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. or until power is restored.

The National Weather Service has issued a high wind warning for the Las Vegas region starting Saturday at 11 a.m. It has said winds may gust to 65 mph near Red Rock Canyon and 60 mph in other areas.

A Pine Dining brunch event was planned for the Mt. Charleston Lodge on Saturday. It will now be held Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., organizers said.

In addition, the Downtown Brew Festival was called off because of the forecast for high winds.

“This was an incredibly difficult decision, and one we didn’t take lightly that has been carefully contemplated,” festival organizers stated on their website. “To let you know how we got to this decision – we started monitoring a Wind Advisory on Tuesday that turned into a High Wind Warning early AM the morning of Friday, Oct 21. These are extreme, sustained winds of 40MPH with 65+ gusts, completely unsafe for an outdoor festival. The safety of all our guests and vendors is of paramount importance, and we don’t want to deliver an experience that isn’t up to our standards, or yours, or get you hurt in the process.”

The organizers also said they would be honoring refunds as “well as making other options available.” They said they would provide more details next week.
