Henderson creates program to honor active-duty military personnel
Banners honoring 22 active-duty service members may soon adorn Henderson streets.
“We want them up before Memorial Day,” city planner Brian Adams said.
On Tuesday, the Henderson City Council approved a new Military Recognition Banner Program to honor men and women who are serving in the U.S. armed forces.
For $150, Henderson residents, businesses or organizations may sponsor a street banner.
The honoree must be a Henderson resident or the immediate family member of a Henderson resident, and must be on active duty and in good standing.
Adams said the banners will be displayed along portions of Green Valley Parkway and in the Water Street District for about six months.
“The biggest concern is: Can they hold up to the weather?” he said.
The deadline to nominate an honoree for the first round of the program is Thursday .
Nomination forms can be obtained at the Community Development and Services Department on the first floor of Henderson City Hall, 240 Water St.
Sponsors should submit a 5-inch-by-7-inch or larger color photograph of the proposed honoree in uniform, or a digital image.
The banners will be 30 inches wide and 84 inches tall. The city will host a ceremony to honor the service members when the banners are removed.
A second round of the program is scheduled to begin by Veterans Day. The nomination deadline for the second round is Oct. 1.
Adams said the city donates staff time to run the program, which is modeled after a similar program in Chino Hills, Calif., a suburb of Los Angeles.

“This is a perfect fit for Henderson, because we have always gone out of our way to honor and recognize our veterans because of our heritage,” city spokesman Bud Cranor said.
Henderson began during World War II with the building of the Basic Magnesium Plant, which supplied the U.S. War Department with magnesium for munitions and airplane parts. Henderson was incorporated in 1953.
