A driver suffered life-threatening injuries when he lost control of his car and hit a tree in western Las Vegas early Thursday, police said.

The 24-year-old man crashed his 2016 Hyundai Accent about 3:40 a.m. at Durango and Boseck drives, near Charleston Boulevard, according to the Metropolitan Police Department. Detectives determined the Accent was heading south on Durango when it crossed into the northbound lanes just north of Boseck, a release said.

The car continued southeast across the intersection and hit a traffic island in its southeast corner, launching the car over the right turn lane and into a pine tree, the release said.

The driver was hospitalized at University Medical Center with “significant,” critical injuries, police said. He wasn’t wearing a seat belt, and police suspect he was impaired.

Durango was closed nearby for several hours but has since reopened.
