southern highlands to host charity walk and fall festival
Southern Highlands is scheduled to host its seventh annual fall festival 5K and one-mile walk on Oct. 22. The race is from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Goett Family Park, along Southern Highlands Parkway, south of Somerset Hills.
The festival, which is free, starts after the walk. Registration prices for the race vary based on when you sign up and for which race.
Proceeds will benefit the Southern Highlands Charitable Foundation, the Southern Highlands Boys & Girls Club, the Down Syndrome Organization of Southern Nevada and We R Community.

ARMY MASTER FITNESS TRAINER weichert TO LEAD WORKSHOPS in summerlin
U.S. Army Master Fitness Trainer Staff Sgt. Ken Weichert, creator of the nation’s longest-running boot camp fitness program, START Fitness, plans to lead workshops during the Elevate Fitness Conference, scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. Sept. 30 and run through Oct. 2 at Summerlin Life Time Athletic, 10721 W. Charleston Blvd.
Learn workouts used to increase combat readiness while preventing stress or injury.
The class is open to the public and any military personnel. The cost for civilians is $20, and soldiers are admitted free with military ID.

RED ROCK 5K SET FOR Oct. 8
The Red Rock 5K is planned for 8 a.m. Oct. 8 at the Red Rock Country Club, 2250 Red Springs Drive.
The walk for charity portion is scheduled to begin at 8:45 a.m.
New-Com and Ryno Running have teamed up with the golf club for a safe, scenic course using the golf course’s concrete cart path.
Entry fee for the walk is $25 and benefits After-School All-Stars Las Vegas. The 5K entry fee is $30. Cash prizes will be awarded.

Bootleg Canyon trail ride planned
Nevada’s first 24-hour relay cycling event "24 Hours of Bootleg Canyon" is scheduled for Oct. 29 at Bootleg Canyon Mountain Bike Park in Boulder City. The race includes a BBQ and bonfire with rock ‘n’ roll live music. To register or for more information, go to 24hoursofbootleg.com.
Lake Mead Triathlon scheduled
In recognition of Veterans Day, the inaugural Lake Mead Triathlon will take place Nov. 12 at the Lake Mead National Recreation Area in Boulder City. The Lake Mead Triathlon is the last triathlon for the West Coast and benefits Operation Rebound. Early registration ends Sept. 30 with fees currently ranging from $65 to $150 for individual participants and $250 to $500 for relay participation. For more information, go to lakemeadtri.com.
BLM TO HOST FEE-free DAYS
The Bureau of Land Management, in conjunction with other agencies within the Department of the Interior, will waive recreation-related fees for visitors to the National System of Public Lands on Saturday for National Public Lands Day and Nov. 11-13 for the Veterans Day holiday weekend.
These fee-free days also apply to areas managed within the BLM’s National Landscape Conservation System.
Other fees, such as overnight camping, cabin rentals and group day use, will remain in effect. For more information, visit blm.gov.
HENDERSON LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEER SOCCER COACHES
The city of Henderson’s sports office is looking for volunteer youth soccer coaches.
Practices began Sept. 6. The season is slated to run from Oct. 1 to Nov. 5.
The opportunity is open to any person with experience in the field or who is willing to learn.
