Flashing lights more effective
than signs in school zones

Thank you for your excellent article on school speed limit signs (View, Aug. 23). One other interpretation of “when children are present” that came from a DMV employee is any time a school bus is visible from the road, even if the bus itself is not on the road, whether school is in session or not. As someone who walks his daughter to school, I find the old flashing lights to have been far more effective. Very few drivers ignored the lights, but with the “when children are present” signs, fewer than half of the drivers slow down, even when a dozen kids with backpacks are trying to cross the street. Personally, I think these new signs come from greedy bureaucrats who want more government revenue at expense of child safety.
