HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS INVITED TO SIGN UP FOR SINGING COMPETITION

Above the Belt invites Las Vegas high school students to sign up for a singing competition planned for Sept. 26-28. The Championship Showcase is set for 7 p.m. Sept. 28 at Faith Lutheran High School Performing Arts Center, 2015 S. Hualapai Way.

The competition offers the chance to win a $2,500 cash prize. Students will be judged by a panel of professional vocal artists, teachers and directors in a round-robin event. The top 10 will compete in the Championship Showcase.

Admission is $10 at the door. The deadline to enroll to compete is Sept. 25.

INTERNATIONAL ACADEMY STUDENTS TO PARTNER WITH WORLD FOOD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Students from the International Academy of Design & Technology, 2495 Village View Drive, have a chance to win one of three $1,000 scholarships for photography, videography and design as part of the World Food Championships, scheduled Nov. 7-10 in downtown Las Vegas.

Organizers are partnering with the school to tap students’ specific design and technical skills to support the event’s massive needs for video and photo documentation and graphic design. Judging includes three components: engagement, artistry and technical. The creators of the best works will be determined by Championships representatives and will receive scholarships and be featured in a 2014 student contest winner profile.

NEVADA ACCEPTING TEACHER OF THE YEAR NOMINATIONS

The Nevada Department of Education is seeking nominations for the 2014 Nevada Teacher of the Year recognition program. Nevada’s Teacher of the Year will be entered in the selection process for the 2014 National Teacher of the Year. The deadline for applications is Oct. 1. SURROGATE PARENTS SOUGHT FOR SPECIAL NEEDS STUDENTS

The Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada’s Educational Surrogate Parent Program is seeking volunteers to advocate for students with disabilities in foster care. The surrogate parents ensure educational support for the students in Clark County School District, meeting with teachers and school officials on behalf of the students.

Interested volunteers are invited to an orientation from 6 to 9 p.m. Oct. 1 in room 105 in Boyd Hall at the Boyd School of Law at UNLV, 4505 S. Maryland Parkway. No experience is necessary.

About 80 volunteers helped more than 130 students last school year. The average time commitment is 25 hours per school year.

GOLF TOURNAMENT TO RAISE MONEY TO HELP FEED STUDENTS

The third annual Chefs for Kids charity golf tournament is scheduled at 7 a.m. Oct. 13 at Painted Desert Golf Club, 5555 Painted Mirage Road. Chefs for Kids is a nonprofit orgnaization that feeds at-risk youths and teaches them about healthy foods.

Registration is $120 and is due Oct. 6. The tournament format will be a four-person scramble. Players can sign up with a foursome or be assigned to a team. To register, email info@brownblankfeld.com.

The tournament is sponsored by the Brown Blankfeld Group. Findlay Honda plans to offer a new car for a hole-in-one. The CFK program is run by the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension and the American Culinary Federation Chefs of Las Vegas. Hole sponsorships also are available.

HOMEWORK HOTLINE OFFERS HELP FOR STUDENTS

After-school homework help will be available to students through the Homework Hotline, which is scheduled to run through May. Students of all grade levels can call 702-799-5111 from 3:30-5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Selected questions will be presented from 4-5 p.m. on Cox cable channels 96 or 111.
