Australian rules football player dies in Las Vegas

A 22-year-old man who died after falling from a Strip hotel on Sunday morning was identified as an Australian rules football player.

John McCarthy, of Portsea, Australia, fell from the Flamingo hotel about 5:30 a.m. Sunday, according to Las Vegas police and the Clark County coroner’s office. He died at University Medical Center.

Police were investigating the circumstances of the fall. The coroner’s office did not release a cause of death.

Port Adelaide Australian Football Club chief executive Keith Thomas said the death was an enormous shock.

“John embraced Port Adelaide and we embraced him, and we are deeply shocked and saddened by his passing,” Thomas said.
