Float Like a Duck event promotes water safety

The sixth annual Float Like a Duck water-safety event is scheduled from 1-4 p.m. Saturday at the Bill and Lillie Heinrich YMCA, 4141 Meadows Lane.

Created by Paragon Pools, the event is part of a community-awareness campaign designed to educate the public on the importance of safety while celebrating the joys of water sports.

Children have a natural tendency to play with and around water. Floating is one of the basic steps in learning how to swim and becoming water safe. At the event, children will learn to float like a duck through song, dance and water activity. The float song is available in English and Spanish.

Saturday’s event is free and open to the public.

Children must be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian.

Additional sponsors are Southern Nevada Health District, Las Vegas Fire and Rescue, KVVU-TV Channel 5, Metropolitan Police Department, KTNV-TV Channel 13, the Association of Pool and Spa Professionals and Brand Ltd.

However, even with a program such as this, parents and guardians need to be proactive in teaching family members how to be safe around all bodies of water and should never abandon basic safety rules such as constant adult supervision, never swim alone and wear Coast Guard-approved life preservers in open waters.
