Desert landscaping can save water, conserve energy, reduce the time and money needed for maintenance and still look beautiful if it is designed correctly. University of Nevada Cooperative Extension will be offering its twice-a-week Landscape Design with the Desert in Mind series starting Feb. 14.

The series was developed by Bob Morris, a horticulture specialist for Cooperative Extension and columnist for the Las Vegas Review-Journal and View newspapers. It aims to transfer landscape water and energy conservation research to the general public in the form of innovative landscape designs. By finishing homework assignments, class attendees will leave the class with a finished home landscape design that is beautiful, functional and saves water and energy. Morris combined his research with the efforts with two local landscape architects in retooling the class curriculum and offering it in Spanish as well.

Classes are set from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Mondays and Thursday in room E at the Lifelong Learning Center, 8050 Paradise Road in Room E.

The fee is $100 per landscape, and it is suggested that two people per landscape project enroll for the class. Class size is limited to 30 attendees.

More than 600 area residents have completed the series of eight classes with a finished design ready to be installed. Some of the landscapes have won local design awards.

Home expo at Cashman Center to kick off spring

Spring gets kicked off in style with a Home Expo Feb. 25-27 at Cashman Center, 850 Las Vegas Blvd. N.

H&S Productions presents the show, which features a variety of home improvement booths and exhibits. The festivities also will include drawings for $10,000 in prizes of home improvement items.

Show hours are noon to 6 p.m. Feb. 25, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Feb. 26 and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Feb. 27.

Admission is $6, with military personnel and children admitted for free. Senior citizens will be admitted for free Feb. 25.

Coupons for two-for-one admission will be available in select editions of the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
