Japanese instructor to lead flower arranging workshop

The Nevada Chapter of the Ikenobo Ikebana Society will host visiting instructor Hiroko Kawai for its June 3 and 4 workshops.

Kawai, a member of the Ikenobo Tokyo Kadokai Chapter, began her studies in 1964. In 1991, she graduated from the advanced course at the Ikenobo Central Training Institute at the art’s headquarters in Kyoto and has taken special advanced courses in various styles. She currently serves on the central governing board of the Ikenobo Society of Floral Art. Additionally, Kawai taught at Ikenobo Ochanomizu College in Tokyo.

Kawai has traveled extensively to exhibit her work at ikebana events in Taiwan, Syria, Buenos Aires, Bangkok, Melbourne, Toronto, London, Taipei and the United States.

In 2006 she was appointed as a special adviser for cultural exchange by the Agency for Cultural Affairs, Japan, and conducted ikebana demonstrations in Spain, France, Sweden and Italy.

Her sessions in Las Vegas will focus on several styles, including shinputai rikka, modern shoka and freestyle. Fresh flowers will be used for all workshops.

Sessions are scheduled from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. both days.
