HEALTH Q&A: Carbohydrates

Q Is it true that carbohydrates are bad for me?

A No. In fact, carbohydrates are the main source of energy for the body. Carbohydrates are the same to you as fuel is for cars, and we all know that our cars need fuel to run. Carbohydrates actually have fewer calories per gram than proteins, alcohols and fats. However, attention should be paid to the amount and types of carbohydrates being consumed. People have gained weight on carbohydrates because they have consumed far too much of them. Think about how many meals you have eaten or seen eaten that start with an appetizer (carbs), have some type of starchy carb in the main course and finish with a dessert (carbs). To make matters worse, they’re rinsed down with a large soda or beer (carbs). This is just too many calories consumed and from the wrong types of carbohydrates. As for the types of carbs, I live by a simple rule, the closer the product is to being pulled from the ground, the better. Think fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains (not processed or beaten into flour products) and legumes (beans and peas). The more color the better. Fuel your body with the right types of carbs and you will be energized and running great for years to come.
