Lovely Ladies
September 28, 2007 - 9:00 pm
The bohemian looks that wrapped their arms around layers and nearly frumpy attire have gone by the wayside, and in its place, the word “lady” will be rolling off your tongue this fall. Fashion aside, this sweeping away of old trends and embracing new doesn’t mean that looks from the past have been forgotten. In fashion, they always have a way of being recycled with fresh takes. Beauty especially loves to return to a former lover and tweak it a bit.
This fall is no different. The makeup artists and hair stylists behind the scenes at Fashion Week created looks that balanced out the ladylike attire donned by models strutting the runway. Grab your highlighter; here’s a look at some of the best new trends in beauty for fall. •
VA-VA VERONICA LAKE LOCKS
Those retro looks for fall that hearken back to the 1940s only get more glamorous with old Hollywood hair. Think soft waves that make you recall Lauren Bacall or Veronica Lake. Gucci, Missoni and Valentino took this look and ran with it during their ’40s-inspired shows. Keep your part deep and use a dollop of mousse to hold the curl.
SIMPLY IRRESISTABLE
The 1980s won’t seem so far away with the full makeup look popularized by those Robert Palmer girls swaying to “Addicted to Love.” Monique Lhuillier and Salvatore Ferragamo embraced this look in separate fashion shows. Smoky eyes and full red lips make this look, but keep your foundation natural and your hair slick to counterbalance.
VIVE LA FRANCE
Yes, you already know what a French manicure looks like, but modernize it for fall with dark colors combined with pinks. Those black nail polishes you bought last fall will work well with an alabaster color (put the black on the tips) like Tracy Reese did or paint your nails a claret with a pink tip like Dior did. Tres sexy. Charcoal replaced black as the color du jour on the runways as well. Even more daring, nude nails without a hint of polish, just a swipe of the buffer for a bit of shine.
GILDED AGE
The Grecian goddess look came to a head last spring and continues through the fall. Give yourself a candlelight glow with touches of gold seen at Bottega Veneta, Matthew Williamson and Yves Saint Laurent. Eye shadows such as Voyage from Nars, Starry Eyed Baked Shadow in Trio from Lorac and Terracotta Tan Magnifier powder from Guerlain can be patted on your cheeks or your cupid’s bow as a highlighter.
CLEOPATRA EYES
Oh, how those cat eyes can add glamour to your look. Louis Vuitton, Badgley Mischka and Prada took Elizabeth Taylor’s favorite look to heart for fall. Draw on your cat eyes with an eye pencil. When you make a mistake, just dab a Q-Tip in moisturizer to erase it away. Just keep your lips in nude to put all of the attention on your eyes.
LOVELY BUNS
The best way to complement cat eyes? A sexy bun that’s just a bit messy and sitting high on your head. Bill Blass combined these two looks in his retro statement. Keep the look updated with a deep side part.
BROW-WOW-WOW
Nothing bushy here. This look calls for definition of the brow as seen at Chanel and Dior shows. Use a clear mascara to anchor your brows in place, or add definition with a creamy brow product.
SLEEK STREAK
The ’60s-inspired hair looks at the fall fashion shows, especially the Edie Sedgwick look from “Factory Girl.” Sleek hair with defined bangs that hit the eyebrow found their ways onto the runways at Michael Kors and Zac Posen. Use a straight iron to achieve this look.
NEON DREAMS
Vampy mouths walked the runways of Diane von Furstenberg and Proenza Schouler and added a bright note to fall’s sometimes dour color schemes. Look for lip colors such as rose and beet and start with a lip stain such as Benetint from Benefit Cosmetics to hold the color. Keep your eyes neutral with a sweep of mascara and no eye shadow.
BED HEAD
The Kate Moss look showed up on the Stella McCartney runway, but you can find use for it on those days you’re running late to work. Hair that looks a wee bit untamed and gloss applied to your lips and eyelids keeps this look fresh and sexy. Even Versace turned to a more structured version of this trend with hair parted down the middle and more blow-dried hair.
GO BIG RED
Move over, blondie. Big red has taken over as the color to go for fall. Rita Hazan, a New York City celebrity stylist, said she is coloring hair in shades of auburn and deep copper. “After all, the fall fashion trends are showing slim silhouettes and menswear inspired pieces in dark shades of black, gray and navy. Why not complement these trends with the hottest shade of red hair?” Hazan said.
the looksmonochromatic mania
To get this look, makeup artist Kim Katunis recommends first deciding whether your skin has warm or cool tones, and then choosing a color palette that will complement. In this case, she stuck with peachy nudes, sweeping a darker color on the eyelid and highlighting with a lighter color (try Laura Mercier Shimmer Bloc in Peach, $38, Neiman Marcus). A peachy blush and lip gloss finish the look.
bed head
You could just roll out of bed and hope to have the look Kate Moss has perfected. Or you could actually take a few minutes to get that sexy hair. Hair stylist Jodi Cunningham started with Bumble & bumble Tonic ($17 for 8 ounces, Tonic) and then Bumble & bumble Thickening Spray ($23, Tonic). Flip your hair over and dry it upside down. Finish with Bumble & bumble Does It All Hairspray ($23 for 10 ounces, Tonic).
ballerina bun
Hair stylist Jodi Cunningham starts this ballerina bun with a ponytail set low on your head. A little hairspray and a lot of ratting with a brush will create the volume needed to produce a fat bun. Twist your hair around the ponytail and pin hair in with bobby pins.
gilded age
This shimmery look can work perfectly any time you have a big event and you want the spotlight on your face. Makeup artist Kim Katunis used copper as her metallic of choice, but gold, silver or bronze can be in the running as well. She built up the copper eye shadow by applying it in layers. Try Becca Jewel Dust in Xantho ($22, Neiman Marcus). To give your face a hint of shimmer, swap your regular powder for Kevyn Aucoin Celestial Powder in Candlelight ($42, Neiman Marcus). For your skin, try a hint of metallic with Scott Barnes Body Bling ($42, scottbarnes.com).
va-va veronica lake locks
Pin-up model locks are easier to get than they look. Hair stylist Jodi Cunningham started by prepping the hair with Bumble & bumble Thickening Spray ($23, Tonic) and then heating up the hot rollers. Section your hair and use Bumble & bumble Styling Lotion ($22, Tonic) on your hair as you roll it up. Once the rollers cool off, pull out your curls, twisting them as you unroll to keep the bounce. Then brush through your curls individually to give them structure. Finish with Bumble & bumble Classic Hairspray ($19 for 10 ounces, Tonic).
cleopatra eyes
The trick to cat eyes is a good gel eye liner and a lot of patience. Think of it as connecting the dots. Start with a light eye shadow such as Laura Mercier Eye Colour in buttercream ($20, Neiman Marcus). Then use a gel liner such as Trish McEvoy High Definition Gel Eye Liner ($18, Neiman Marcus) and apply with a specialty brush such as Shu Uemura Natural Brush 4F ($18, Nordstrom). First draw a wing in a diagonal line toward the brow, then connect the line back to your lashes. The thicker you apply it, the more retro you look. A few false eyelashes in the corners completes the look. For a retro lipstick look, try Bare Escentuals Lipstick in Sweet Pea ($15, Ulta) in a bubblegum-inspired shade.
vive la france
Nail artist Kelsey White got this look by starting with OPI Alpine Snow on the base, then following with a second coat of OPI Happy Anniversary over the top. She finished by applying OPI Light My Sapphire on the tips. All polishes $7.50 at Ulta.
simply irresistable
Those Robert Palmer girls are back with their slicked-back hair and smoky eyes. Makeup artist Kim Katunis used MAC Cosmetics Paint Pot in Blackground ($16.50, MAC Cosmetics) on the eyelid and smudged a black kohl eyeliner to get that sultry look. Then she used a berry red lipstick to get full lips worn by the Palmer girls. Try Christian Dior Dior Addict Lipstick in Positively Red ($24.50, Neiman Marcus).
sleek streak
For perfect slicked-back hair, use Bumble & bumble Shine Spray and Bumble & bumble De-Frizz ($34 for 4 ounces and $22 for 4 ounces respectively, Tonic), and comb hair back into a low ponytail.
vive la france
Nail artist Kelsey White got this look by starting with Essie My Way nail polish on the base ($7, Ulta) and then using MAC Cosmetics Nocturnal ($10, MAC Cosmetics) on the tips.
