Henderson resident wins Pinterest contest

Woodside Homes has announced Shay Hathaway of Henderson as the winner of the Design it, Pin it, Win it contest via Pinterest. The promotion, offered to Woodside Homes residents across the country, encouraged participants to show off their interior design skills for a chance to win a $5,000 gift card to Williams-Sonoma, Pottery Barn or West Elm. Once Shay’s shopping spree and decor installations were complete, she received a photo shoot by professional interior photographer, Eric Jamison.

Shay talks about her design approach and style.

Q: What did you do when you received the news that you won?

A: I called my fiancé, Mike! This is his win, too. He designed and built many of our furniture and art pieces. Our home is very representative of our relationship and encompasses both of our styles. Mike is a production manager and artist, and I’m a retail store designer and visual merchandiser, so our house has turned into our design laboratory.

Q: You have a bold, adventurous style aesthetic. What’s your décor philosophy?

A: I’d call it quirky, which is eclectic’s younger, weirder sister. I love beautiful, good-quality furniture pieces, but accessories are really the fun part for me. Just about anything, as long as it’s meaningful to you, can be used as décor. Everything in our home evokes joy or represents a memory, from the giant, gold rhinoceros we bought in Palm Springs to the tiny little army men that were on our first Christmas tree. I believe your home should be a personal scrapbook as well a reflection of your personality. Mike and I have very big personalities!

Q: What decorating tips would you give someone with a $5,000 remodel budget?

A: If what you’re seeking is $5,000 toward home finishes, I’d put my money into the kitchen and baths. You’ll thank yourselves when it’s time to resell. But if it’s a cosmetic change you’re looking for, identify what is really representative of you and your family and be brave. People always tell me they are afraid that the things that they pick won’t work together. If you love it, and it means something to you, it will work. Also, play with scale! Often people are afraid to commit to a look, so they purchase a couple of small pieces. They end up underwhelmed by the result and they give up. Instead, buy one big décor item, or one large piece of art. The impact is far greater!

Q: How does your Woodside home work with your style aesthetic?

A: Mike and I looked at model homes for over a year before we settled on Gardens at The Park, at Cadence. We always favored Woodside because they had such great windows. All of the homes were really light and bright. What we liked about the home we chose is that it had a midcentury modern façade, and that modern vibe carried into the rest of the house. We love the high ceilings and clearstory windows. Also, all of the main living areas face into an interior courtyard, which is great for entertaining. It was just a really good fit for us.

Q: Pantone just announced its color of the year — ultra Violet — how would you integrate this color in your scheme?

A: I’ve always loved agate and geodes. I’d bring in some big, chunky organic pieces in ultra violet tones to play off the grays in my living room!
