Breast cancer events raise money for research, treatment
Numerous activities and tie-ins are planned in observance of October as National Breast Cancer Awareness month, which is aimed at raising awareness and funds for breast cancer research and treatment..
Among the variety of activities and events scheduled are:
■ Fashionably Pink, an evening of shopping, sips and sweets, with sounds by DJ Mika Gold, 7-10 p.m. Friday at Nikki Beach Club at Tropicana, 3801 Las Vegas Blvd. South. Tickets, $20 in advance and $25 at the door, includes a welcome cocktail. The first 200 guests receive gift bags. Benefit the Southern Nevada affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure. ■ Grapes & Hops Festival, to benefit Par for the Cure, 5-9 p.m. Saturday at the Springs Preserve, 333 S. Valley View Blvd. Tickets are $35 in advance and $40 day of per person. Available by advance only, tickets are $60 per pair, and VIP tickets are $75. Par for the Cure is a nonprofit organization dedicated to raising funds for breast cancer research (822-7700).
■ All 11 Station Casinos properties will have "21 for a Cure," featuring a "pink" blackjack table with winnings being donated to the Southern Nevada affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, 10 a.m.-midnight Saturday and Sunday. Station Casinos will also offer "Project Pink," a month-long community campaign, featuring pink themed desserts available for purchase at the Grand Cafes at Red Rock Resort, Texas Station, Sunset Station, Santa Fe Station and Boulder Station. Fifty percent of sales will be donated to the Komen Southern Nevada affiliate.
■ The American Cancer Society’s annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer 5k walk is Saturday at JW Marriott, 221 N. Rampart Blvd. Registration begins at 7 a.m., with the walk at 8 a.m. There is no registration fee for the walk (strideslasvegas.com).
■ The Hard Rock Cafe Las Vegas, 3771 Las Vegas Blvd. South, hosts PINKTOBER Rock n Roll Fashion show to benefit the American Cancer Society at 8 p.m. Saturday. The event will feature a performance by "American Idol’s" Elliott Yamin, drink specials, prizes and a silent auction. Tickets are $15 in advance or at the door (733-7625).
■ Wacoal’s "Fi(gh)t for the Cure" bra fitting event 10 a.m.-7 p.m. today through Saturday at the following Dillard’s locations: today at Meadows mall (870-2039); Friday at the Galleria at Sunset mall (435-6300); and Saturday at the Fashion Show mall (733-2008). For every woman who participates, Wacoal will make a $2 donation to Susan G. Komen for the Cure. An additional $2 donation will be made for each purchase of a Wacoal bra, shapewear piece or b.tempt’d bra.
■ Bunco or Bust to benefit Breast Cancer Research Foundation 7 p.m. Saturday in the Grand Ballroom at CasaBlanca Resort. Registration is $35. For details, call 888-711-4653, ext. 14 (www.casablancaresort.com).
■ Season 4 A Cure Cancer Run Sunday at the Nevada Cancer Institute, 1 Breakthrough Way, near Town Center Drive and the Las Vegas Beltway. The 5K Run & Fun Walk will feature a 100-yard children’s dash, children’s activities and a breakfast buffet by Four Seasons’ chefs. Registration begins at 7 a.m. with the run/walk at 9 a.m. A children’s 100-yard dash will be at 8 a.m. Adult registration is $25 in advance and $40 day of. Registration fees for ages 12 and younger are $10 in advance and $15 day of. Registration fees for seniors ages 55 and older are $20 in advance and $30 day of. ■ University Medical Center is offering a free breast cancer screening, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m, Oct. 6. This is a clinical breast exam by a health care provider and does not include a mammogram. Appointments are on a walk-in basis. The screenings will be in the UMC Cast Clinic, 1000 Shadow Lane, at Shadow Lane and West Charleston Boulevard (outside the hospital building).
■ "Flair for the Cure," hosted by the American Cancer Society’s Young Professionals Against Cancer, features flair bartenders creating specialty cocktails to be auctioned off along with prize packages at 6 p.m. Oct. 7 at Rock & Rita’s at Circus Circus, 2880 Las Vegas Blvd. South. Admission is free. "Balloon pop" raffle tickets will be available for $25 (ypaclv.com).
■ St. Rose Dominican Hospitals will present the third annual Rose Regatta Dragon Boat Race and Festival, to support those affected by breast cancer, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Oct. 8 at MonteLago Village and Marina at Lake Las Vegas. The races will feature approximately 60 dragon boat teams. The festival includes a Flowers on the Water ceremony, a Painted Paddles Gallery, the Light the Way lantern tribute, live entertainment and activities. ■ Tao Beach at The Venetian hosts Save Second Base event 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Oct. 8. Pink bracelets are sold at the door with 100 percent of proceeds going to Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Attendees in a pink bathing suit will receive a one hour open bar.
■ Las Vegas Harley-Davidson’s Women’s Garage Party, 2605 S. Eastern Ave., will be 5:30-8 p.m. Oct. 12. The girl’s night out social event will feature entertainment, wine and hors d’oeuvres, a motorcycle question and answer session, and a silent auction to benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure. ■ The Southern Highlands Gold Club, 1 Robert Trent Jones Lane, will host Pink Tee Golf & Social event, to benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure, Oct. 12. ■ The seventh annual Southwest Valley Vons Craft Fair to benefit breast cancer research 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Oct. 15-16 at Vons, 8540 W. Desert Inn Road. The fair will feature arts and crafts, music and a raffle (240-0293).
■ The RTC Viva Bike Vegas 2011 Oct. 15 at Town Square, 6605 Las Vegas Blvd. South., benefits Nevada Cancer Institute, After-School All-Stars and Nevada Child Seekers. Bike rides begin at 5:30 a.m. The event features three rides, including a 17-mile ride, a 60-mile Half Century ride and a 103-mile Century ride. Registration fees vary. ■ ULTA Beauty, 2186 N. Rainbow Blvd., hosts Salon Cut-A-Thon to benefit the Breast Cancer Research Foundation 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Oct. 16. For a minimum donation of $10, participants receive a cut, shampoo and style. Participation is first-come, first-served and sign-ups begin when the store opens at 11 a.m. Beginning Sunday and running through October, ULTA Beauty’s Windows of Love-Donate with a Kiss campaign will cover windows of stores across the country with kiss decals, each representing a $1 donation (ulta.com/windowsoflove).
■ Smiles for Survivors Foundation inaugural Blow Out Breast Cancer event 6-10 p.m. Oct. 20 at Square Colour Salon + Spa, 1225 S. Fort Apache Road. The nonprofit foundation raises awareness of cancer treatment’s impact on oral health. The event will feature salon treatments, food, champagne, live music and a silent auction. General admission is $20 for the event only. Spa packages are available, and prices vary from $30-$70 (255-7050).
■ "Boulder City Goes Passionately Pink" beginning noon Oct. 21 on the steps of Boulder City’s City Hall, 401 California Ave. The event is open to the public. Participants will gather in pink attire for a program and photo. Following the photo, participants also will take part in making a pink human ribbon photo at Bicentennial Park. Other activities include a boxed lunch fundraiser for $10. T-shirts, hats and magnets will be available for purchase for $10 each with $5 going to the Komen Southern Nevada affiliate (293-2034).
■ Blue Martini at Town Square, 6593 Las Vegas Blvd. South, will turn its signature blue uniforms pink in honor of its annual Pink Party featuring drawings, food and more, 8-11 p.m. Oct. 22 (949-2583).
■ The Dave Austin Memorial Ride — Poker Run, in support of cancer care and research at Nevada Cancer Insitute, 9 a.m. Oct. 23. Following the ride, entertainment and food will be at the Nevada Cancer Institute’s Summerlin, 1 Breakthrough Way, near Town Center Drive and the Las Vegas Beltway (499-2488).
■ "Grins for a Good Cause" bowling tournament, presented by Patterson Dental, will be 6:30-8:30 p.m. Oct. 28 at Red Rock Resort. The fee is $110 per lane for a team of four or five bowlers, with $45 of each lane rental going to Susan G. Komen for the Cure. The fee includes two hours of bowling, shoe rental, cake, and one entry per person for a drawing (731-4267).
■ UNLV Pink Football Game: UNLV vs. Colorado State at 3 p.m. Oct. 29 at Sam Boyd Stadium, 7000 E. Russell Road. The halftime show will feature a performance by children from the Rebel Starzz group performing in pink attire. For game tickets, call 739-3267.
■ Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood, 3663 Las Vegas Blvd. South, will have a fountain fundraiser throughout October. All coins tossed into the fountain and the indoor rainstorm will be donated to the Komen Southern Nevada affiliate.
■ Silverton’s Earn & Win gaming promotion will benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure in October. From Oct. 1-15, players who earn 500 points in one day will receive a wine accessory set, and those who earn 1,000 points will earn the set and a bottle of wine. For every 1,000 point redemption, Silverton will donate $1 to Susan G. Komen for the Cure. (263-7777).
■ The Tropicana, 3801 Las Vegas Blvd. South, will be lit in pink throughout October to raise awareness and funds for Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Pink dining specials will be available at Biscayne and Bacio by Carla Pellegrino, with a portion of proceeds donated to the foundation (troplv.com/pinkoctober).
■ Drink Pink at Total Wine locations throughout the month of October with $4 from every case of selected wines benefiting research and treatment.
■ Pink Jeep Tours will have its annual "Trek for the Cure" event throughout the month of October. The off-road tour company will donate $5.10 from the sales of all Red Rock Canyon tours in October to the Nevada Cancer Institute (1-888-900-4480 or 702-895-6777).
■ Panera Bread locations will donate 10 cents from each sale of a Pink Ribbon Bagel (cherry vanilla bagel), and $1 from every Power of Pink Bakers Dozen Bagels to the Komen Southern Nevada affiliate.
■ Throughout October, a portion of proceeds from the sales of PINKTOBER merchandise at Hard Rock properties, and online, will benefit the Breast Cancer Research Foundation and the Caron Keating Foundation (hardrock.com).
■ Jersey Mike’s Subs’ Mike’s Way to a Cure program has been raising funds for Susan G. Komen for the Cure through the sales of pink souvenir cups, T-shirts and the Pink Ribbon Combo. The fundraising continues through October at Jersey Mike’s locations.
■ Pink Nails, 8414 Farm Road, will offer pink ribbon designs painted on fingers and toes, and pink glitter temporary tattoos, throughout October. Proceeds will be donated to Susan G. Komen for the Cure (384-8889).
