Gogol Bordello expanding dimensionless gypsy punk
On the first track of their latest disc, “Pure Vida Conspiracy,” Gogol Bordello frontman Eugene Hutz decries the borders that separate one country from the next.
Recorded in El Paso, Texas, the album is informed by the tension regarding the breaching of boundaries between nations, questioning the need for them in the first place.
Musically speaking, “Pure Vida Conspiracy” is also a reflection of its environment, with Gogol Bordello further expanding its already dimensionless gypsy punk with a number of Latin and Tex-Mex flourishes, from country and western to mariachi.
As they continue to demonstrate here, this bunch refuses to acknowledge divisions between countries and genres of music alike.
