If there’s one thing we want in the summer in Southern Nevada, it’s a treat with a name that sounds a little bit like a shiver. You know the type – the frozen-but-still-liquid, carbonated-but-more-frozen, brain-freeze-inducing beverages that come out of the machine sort of like soft serve.

Two programs are offering free meals for kids at 21 locations on weekdays this summer to those ages 2-18. The Culinary Academy of Las Vegas is providing free meals at 19 sites through the federal 2012 Summer Food Service Program. Communities in Schools of Nevada is offering free meals and snacks in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Southern Nevada Housing Authority and Three Square food bank.
Protests flowed like Coke from a soda fountain after New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg proposed limiting the size of soft drinks sold in the city to 16 ounces or less. But Bloomberg’s gambit shone a spotlight on the link between sugary drinks and obesity. “I really agree with him,” said Joanna Gorman, a registered dietitian at University Medical Center.
