Dave Berry, a Maine native who’s looking for B&M Baked Beans in a jar — which he says are smaller than their canned counterparts and have a more pronounced molasses flavor — has a kindred spirit in Rob Lindley, who emailed that the beans are “an old family favorite for decades.” Lindley and Richard Schilhavy reported that they’re available at the commissary at Nellis Air Force Base, but for those who don’t have commissary privileges, Ann Brown faxed that they’re also available at Glazier’s Food Marketplace, 8525 W. Warm Springs Road. …

For Anne Duggan, Brown said pan-fried oysters are available at the Big Sur Oyster Bar at the South Point, 9777 Las Vegas Blvd. South. And T. Bowman and Dave Levesque recommended those served at Lazy Joe’s Fish and Chips, 7835 S. Rainbow Blvd. …

More on beet horseradish: Rich Kohut emailed what he said is “the real deal,” a recipe from his Ukrainian grandmother that he makes only at Christmas and Easter: Finely grate 2 cans of whole beets. Drain off juice. Coarsely grate 1/3 cup of fresh horseradish root, or use an 8-ounce jar of extra-hot horseradish (he recommends the round jar of Silver Springs). Mix beets and horseradish with 1 tablespoon sugar and 2 tablespoons vinegar, adding more horseradish if you’d like. Refrigerate for one day or more, drain off juice, stir and serve.

All of you expatriate Texans who miss your beloved Blue Bell ice cream (and others who have discovered its joys) probably have heard the news, but if not, here it is: A Blue Bell distribution center is set to open early next month in North Las Vegas. That means Blue Bell will finally be available in valley stores (and some in Pahrump and Mesquite), such as Albertsons, Food 4 Less, Walgreens, Walmart and some independents.

And while Hostess products have returned to stores, bargain-hunting Hostess fans will surely be happy to learn that their products now are available at Big Lots locations. The deal with Big Lots replaces the old Hostess Thift Stores.
