Taste of the Town: Readers come through with hard to find dried beans

Leave it to Taste of the Town readers to ferret out a source for an ostensibly obscure item. For Ginger McGraw, who’s looking for dried canellini beans, they have several local sources.

Ann Brown and Sue Mazzola said they can be found at Whole Foods Market, which has four stores in the valley. Daniel Bellina found them in the bulk-foods section at Winco, which has stores at 80 N. Stephanie St. in Henderson and 6101 N. Decatur Blvd.

And Judy Morrow emailed that she gets them at Village Meat &Wine at 5025 S. Eastern Ave., adding that she buys four or five bags at a time and ships them to her sister in Arizona, too. “Their dried-bean soup mixes are also excellent,” she added. …

For Dorene Starita, who’s looking for New England clam chowder prepared without bacon, Peter Schneider emailed that it’s available every Friday in the Sourdough Cafe and on the Wild West Buffet at Arizona Charlie’s Boulder, 4575 Boulder Highway. …

For Vickie Barker, who’s looking for Breakstone products, Fern Modena emailed, “Breakstone is the East Coast name for what we Westerners call Knudsen,” sort of like the Hellman’s/Best Foods and Hardees/Carl’s Jr. splits.

Knudsen is available at numerous local supermarkets. The same information was sent by Joan Bernstein and Colleen Sams. …

And Joyce Plumer emailed to share that Gilcrease Orchard, 7800 N. Tenaya Way, has green tomatoes, which are frequently sought by readers. Plumer said they’re $1 a pound. A visit to the orchard’s website, www.TheGilcreaseOrchard.org, reveals a lot of other produce available at bargain prices, such as regular red tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, summer squash, carrots, beets, peaches and apricots, all for $1 a pound.
