Readers track down chili beans
January 23, 2013 - 2:03 am
For Ashok Yadev, who’s looking for canned chili beans – not to be confused with chili with beans – readers say the key words are “Bush’s” and “Great Value.”
Paula Zimmer, Jim Lucey and Colleen Sams emailed that the Bush’s brand (in mild or spicy, Zimmer said) can be found at supermarkets including Smith’s, Wal-Mart and Albertsons.
And Lindsay Dowrick of Kingman, Ariz., and Angie Hurt emailed that the Great Value brand is available at Wal-Mart; Hurt said she gets them for her 93-year-old father, who first told her of their availability. …
For Sandy Mindiola, Dowrick reported finding Carnation Malted Milk powder at Wal-Mart in Kingman, Sams found it at Albertsons at 2650 W. Horizon Ridge Parkway in Henderson and Barbara Delaterre found malted-milk powder at www.Nowfoods.com. …
For Kris Kantebet, who’s looking for kosher dills similar to those served in old-school delis, which are light green with flesh that’s almost white, Valerie Weinberg emailed that in some places they’re known as “new” dills but in Las Vegas they’re “half-sours” and available at the Bagel Cafe at 301 N. Buffalo Drive and at Weiss Restaurant Deli and Bakery at 2744 N. Green Valley Parkway in Henderson. Joyce Gargan also recommended Weiss. …
For William Steffen, who’s looking for cans of whole button mushrooms packed in water, Deena Pinto emailed that the Four Seasons brand is available at Smart & Final. …
For Jack Atkins, who’s looking for Quaker Puffed Wheat, Jennifer Chambers of Kingman reported finding wheat puffs with the bulk packaged cereals in the cereal aisle at Smith’s in Kingman. …
More on Italian sausage and eggs: Ann Brown recommends Norm’s Egg Cafe at 3655 S. Durango Drive. …
Here are more reader requests.
Helen Brown: sugar-free bread-and-butter pickles, similar to the Nalley’s she used to get at Wal-Mart ;
Tobe Martin: liquid sugar for iced tea ;
Sharon P. Szanto: Swanson’s Chicken a la King in a can, and IMO artificial sour cream;
Lynne Davidson: boxes of frozen breaded scallops, which she used to get at Sam’s Club;
Laurie Brenner: a local source for Italian sausage bread;
Dottie Randesi: a local source for Adobo seasoning;
Arlene Milas: fresh stewing chickens, for making soup, and store-made Polish sausage, both fresh and smoked, preferably in Henderson;
And Ron Stout: “fat, succulent” Penn Cove mussels from Washington state, because “the New Zealand green lip mussels being fed to us here can’t hold a candle to the Whidbey Island beauties.”
