Readers in the know on peanut chews
February 18, 2009 - 10:00 pm
I’ll admit that Goldenberg Peanut Chews were not something that had ever been on my radar before Irene Williams submitted a query for them, but plenty of her fellow readers know all about them.
JoEllen Ruschmann said they can be found at Geri’s Olde Philadelphia, 3430 E. Tropicana Ave. But Danny Becker, David Albert and Janine Williams pointed out that the company was purchased a few years ago by Just Born Inc., the makers of Peeps. “I have had the new ones but they are not the same,” Williams said. “She’s not missing anything!” …
For Julie Hughes, who is looking for original Gardenburger brand gardenburgers, Susan Sanders e-mailed that she gets them at Albertsons at 10140 W. Flamingo Road, and Theresa Renner suggested Costco, the health-food freezer at Smith’s and Whole Foods Market. …
For Stacey Webster, who’s looking for sour Jelly Bellys, Renner said she has found them at Trader Joe’s. Rhianna Johnson recommended www.jellybelly.com (or call 800-522-3267) or www. nothingbutjellybeans.com (or call 843-795-6505). And Gary Goodwin of Popcorn Chicago at the Stratosphere, 2000 Las Vegas Blvd. South, e-mailed that he carries 10 flavors of sour Jelly Bellys and 60 flavors in all. …
For Bill Gates (the other one), who’s looking for Jolly Ranchers in bulk, Dayle Gwinner said she finds them at Smith’s at 10100 W. Tropicana Ave., and Judi Caro suggested the Death Valley Nut & Candy Co., 900 E. Highway 95 North in Beatty. …
For Vera Pascale, who’s looking for pinwheel sausages, Frank DeFrancesco e-mailed that they can be found at LaDuca’s New York Italian Deli, 72 W. Horizon Ridge Parkway in Henderson. …
For readers who are looking for pomegranate jelly, Kathy McCulloch e-mailed that she finds it throughout the year at Albertsons at 1300 E. Flamingo Road. …
More on meatloaf: The best is at Triple George Grill, 201 N. Third St., e-mailed Mark O’Brien. …
And Ellen M. Skiba cleared up any Claussen pickle relish confusion: The plastic bottles, she said, were just for the summer picnic season, with the glass jars offered year-round. She noted that the relish in the jar has more calories than the one in plastic, “but it’s well worth it.” Jan Albright said the jars can be found at Vons at 820 S. Rampart Blvd., and Linda Silvestri said she found them at Albertsons at 1650 N. Buffalo Drive. …
Reader requests: Gwinner is looking for Popeye spinach, which she used to find at Smith’s, and Nescafe decaffeinated vanilla flavor. …
Caro is looking for Brown Sugar Twin or Sweet ‘N Low Brown. …
McCulloch is looking for the chefs from the now-closed Que Pasa Mexican restaurant, which was at 4090 S. Eastern Ave., because “they had the best guacamole in town.” …
And Guy Roark is looking for a restaurant that serves “red-eye gravy over grits and a big slice of Smithfield (or similar) ham.”
